I'm glad I'm not the only one with this train of thought. Great read! Really enjoyed your writing style.

(I know it also sometimes means, “The recipe developer didn’t include this, but when we were taking the photos we thought the food was ugly and needed a pretty decoration.) LOLOLOLOLOL!

And also, piggybacking on Kelsey, remember your 3 line! You can try it out and see if you really desire it. My MG energy probably sends you in weird directions too.

Dear Joy: you are perfect and I adore you. As a projector, you feel and amplify other people’s desires so no 💩 you have trouble knowing what you actually desire! It’s possible for you (as with the olives), but it’ll take a whole lot of presence, practice and emptying out other people’s energy. So, ya know, you’ve gotta be all-in on it.

That phrase has always caught me too. It's so loaded!

Thank you. I know you overthink recipe words as much as I do :)

I do and then sometimes still fall into this kind of recipe lingo.

I love this essay! As a words person and food person, I appreciate how you examine this intersection and the power it has. It's so true. "If desired," always sounded so lavish to me, in the old-timey "dahling" sort of manner. How strange the things our minds do!

What a great essay! I love the way you wove in the theme of desire. It's my kind of rant, along with other odd recipe speak that I cover also, such as this one: https://diannejacob.substack.com/p/on-taste-and-adjust-the-seasoning

Thank you Dianne! What a wonderful compliment coming from you! I love your rant as well. When I'm making someone else's recipe I want to be told what to do :)
